💙Get to know wildflowers - The Forget-Me-Not 🩵
Forget-me-nots or Myosotis Sylvatica bear small flowers that are usually blue but can also be tinged with pink. They look best when planted in groups and form a carpet of blue! The name Myosotis comes from the Greek for ‘mouse’s ear’ as its leaves resemble a mouse’s ear 🐭!
There are over 74 varieties of Forget-me-Not throughout the world and one of the more common varieties is the Woodland (Myosotis Scorpiodes) or Scorpion Grass. So called because of how the plant grows - clusters of flowers emerge and bend, looking like a Scorpion’s tail! 🦂
Forget-Me-Nots are usually biennial, meaning they will take two years to complete their growing cycle of flowering and producing seed. They die back in winter and re-emerge in the spring. Once you have them in your garden you wont need to re-seed as they are prolific self seeders! However, as cute as they are, they can take over if not managed! 🙄Control their spread by removing any unwanted plants. Also, deadhead any spent blooms and seed heads to prevent them spreading.
Forget-Me-Nots symbolize true love and respect.💖
They are also the symbol of protection and luck and according to folklore have the power to protect humans against witches! 🧙🏻♀️
King Henry IV used them as his symbol after returning to England following his exile, allegedly as a good luck charm.
💙🩵They are also the symbol for International Missing Children's Day and the Alzheimer's Society uses Forget-Me-Nots as symbols for memory loss and to raise awareness of this devastating disease 😔
